The Target:

Worldwide CO2 reduction with Renewable Energy Sources and

optimized energy efficiency

District Heating and Cooling is already in Europe recognized as an important means to achieve CO2 reductions. The increasing environmental problems have led to political action around the globe. One of the most comprehensive political initiatives is the Renewable Energy Source (RES) directive passed by the European Union in December 2008.

The goal of the RES-directive is - by the year 2020 - to achieve:
  • 20% CO2 reduction
  • 20% of our energy from renewable energy sources
  • 20% increase in energy efficiency
District Heating and Cooling is a central part of the Directive, and EU-member states are committed to include District Energy in their action plans.

By the inclusion in the Directive, District Heating and Cooling will expand considerably in Europe. Hopefully, this will inspire other regions in the world to join forces and implement District Energy as a central part of their energy systems.

The future solution depends on joint commitment – 15% District Energy is halfway to CO2 emissions targets.

District Energy is the answer to many of our environmental problems – are we ready to engage in the joint commitment it requires?
